The Gold Krugerrand 1 oz. coin is the best value today. It was first introduced in 1967 by the Rand Refinery of South Africa, and it has remained one of the most prestigious bullion coins in the world. South Africa made history when it introduced the 22-karat Gold Krugerrand, since it was made available for purchase by members of the public. The design on the front (obverse) side features a portrait of Paul Kruger, a former South African President, while the reverse side features a Springbok Antelope, national symbol of South Africa. Round the edge the country name is printed in both English (South Africa) and Afrikaans (Suid-Afrika). The Krugerrand is very pure, minted in an alloy of 91.67% Gold. For many years the Gold Krugerrand Coin was banned by many countries, due to the country’s apartheid policies. The 22-carat Gold feature of this coin was adopted by the US Mint in the manufacture of the United States’ first bullion coin, the American Eagle.
